MIDDLE SCHOOL

6th-8th Grades

The PEF Summer Enrichment Middle School Program serves incoming 6th - 8th Grade students.

Located at Piedmont Middle School at 740 Magnolia Avenue in Piedmont.

                   Session 1 - JUNE 4-7          Session  1 -  $200       (After 5/15 $225)                       

                   Session 2 - JUNE 10-14      Session  2 -  $240       (After 5/15 $265)                     

                   Session 3 - JUNE 17-21      Session  3 -  $240       (After 5/15 $265)                 

                   Session 4 - JUNE 24-28      Session  4 -  $240       (After 5/15 $265) 

  

Sessions are 2 Courses - Pick 2 Classes per Session at Registration

   Students entering 6th - 8th grade take two classes during each session (9am-Noon)

   

     Period 1 - 9-10:20am                   Break - 10:20-10:40am             Period 2 - 10:40-Noon               (Snack is provided)

Please note that Session I starts on Tuesday, June 4.

Course offerings are dependent upon registration.  

Class schedules will be determined based on interest and to minimize conflicts.

Some classes require an additional $5 or more materials fee.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF EACH SESSION STUDENTS WILL MEET ON THE MAIN BRICK PATIO IN FRONT OF THE GYM.

AFTER A QUICK INTRODUCTION AND ORIENTATION, THEIR TEACHERS WILL TAKE THEM TO THEIR FIRST CLASS.

2019 MIDDLE SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES (FOR STUDENTS ENTERING 6-8)

There are 4 sessions for Grades 6-8, each 1 week in length. Pick 2 classes from the lists above (Class 1 & Class 2).

 

3D Dragons (Clay)

An all level Clay sculpture class making DRAGONS, DUNGEONS, & DOLPHINS & More! If you like  Dragons, or just like making anythings in clay, I hope you take this class! I would love to help your with your creations…You will learn a variety of hand-building techniques in clay & learn about other amazing sculptural materials.

Abstract Art

Express yourself! In this fun and experimental class, students will learn about the works of famous abstract artists and explore some of their techniques and styles to create their own freestyle abstract pieces. We will make drawings, paintings and collages.

Babysitting

Are you ready to earn some money and have fun? Join us as we learn tips for being a safe and successful babysitter.  Students will explore games and activities to use while babysitting, and focus on responsibility skills. Upon completion of the course students will receive a certificate stating they are ready to babysit.

Basketball

Come and enjoy basketball for all skill levels.  We will have 3 on 3 team play, Horse, Knockout, Around the World as well as open gym shoot around.  Grab some friends and sign up to ball out!

Creative Writing On the Go

Students will write narratives, short stories, and poetry using vivid details. They will venture outside the classroom each day to write in different settings around campus. They will be inspired by their surroundings as they write creatively in this fun interactive writing class.

Cupcake Wars

Take your creativity into the world of food with Cupcake Wars!  Each day there will be a competition to design the best bakery item.  You will be provided with all the necessities to decorate and present your bakery item, based on the day's theme.  No cooking is involved in this class, decorating only. Come and be creative, get messy, and enjoy some friendly competition.  The daily prize? Cupcakes of course! Everyone will get to take home their decorated bakery item to show off and then enjoy.

Desserts

We will learn to make a variety of desserts you can impress your friends and family with. No experience needed. Just bring your sweet tooth.

Note: This class will be 3 hours for both class 1 and 2 of the session.

Dungeons and Dragons

D&D is an immersive storytelling game that also includes elements of probability, problem solving, and cooperative social interaction. It's growing in popularity in high schools and on college campuses across the world, making it a great hobby for any student to pick up, but especially those who might otherwise struggle to find friends.

Film and Animation

Lights! Camera! Action!  A hands-on course where students will learn some basics of film, try stop-motion animation, and then plan, storyboard, shoot, and edit a short using iMovie to edit. Have fun and create your movie magic. Course may be repeated.

Frisbee Golf

Frisbee Golf replaced Pickleball. It will be played at Haven Elementary. Students will meet at PMS and be walked to and from Havens for this class.

Intro to World Drumming

Have you always wanted to try out percussion instruments? If so, this is the class for you! Participants in the class will play a wide variety of percussion instruments including drumset, conga, bongos, shakers and more. Students will learn proper playing technique for each instrument and explore improvisation ideas and basic rhythmic patterns from around the world.  No previous experience is needed for participation. Instruments are provided.

Jazz & Rock Ensemble

Would you like to play popular songs in a group with your friends? All instruments are welcome! This ensemble will perform various jazz and pop pieces and focus on basic improvisation. If you are planning to take PMS Jazz Band - this is a great way to learn more about the style and basic improvisation concepts. Students must have 1 year of experience on their instrument and bring their own instrument to the class. Drumset, piano, and amps provided.

Joy of Baking

You will learn the basics of baking. No boxed mixes in this kitchen! We will make a variety of baked goodies. Everything will be from scratch with simple ingredients you probably all have at home.

Note: This class will be 3 hours for both class 1 and 2 of the session.

Junk Drawer Engineering

Kids channel their inner "McGyver" to use common household items to complete engineering challenges.   Possible projects include: catapults, air rockets, mini-ziplines and much much more!

The Mindful Arts & Crafts Studio

Did you know that creative activity significantly lessens stress in the body, regardless of artistic experience or talent?  Or, do you just love to be creative and make things?? Come to The Mindful Arts & Crafts Studio where we will create a daily arts & craft project. These will be projects you can take home to help you relax in everyday life.  And you'll be able to recreate projects again and again having learned a new skills.

Miniatures Wargaming

Miniatures wargaming combines probability (it's a dice game, after all) with both sculpture and painting, as the kits need to be assembled and painted and are frequently modified. There is also a strong element of storytelling, since the worlds of these games are broad, with lots of room for participants to invent their own characters.

Nature Art Studio

Like to do art and crafts?  Like to spend time outside? Join the Nature Art Studio to create original artworks with things found in nature.  We will make solar prints, pressed flower crafts (bookmarks/jewelry/paperweights), leaf prints, painted rocks, and more!

Photography With Phones

Learn techniques to take a variety of photos.  Bring your phone or digital camera as we go outside to take photos.  Then take photos after class to build a photo album. Edit your photos in iPhoto and create a slideshow to share through Google Drive. A selection of your photos will be displayed at PMS at the beginning of school in August.  Course may be repeated.

Pickleball (cancelled due to construction on sports courts, replaced with Frisbee Golf)

Pickleball is a fast paced racket sport that is fun and much easier than tennis.  Both singles and doubles will be played. The class gives players the opportunity to  meet new people in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Sculptures & Installations

Start something tiny and build it into a big, multifaceted object! This class will offer students a space to experiment with scale, weight, balance and material. We will explore different themes and build site specific installations, architectural projects, and much more.

Small Orchestra Ensemble

 

Join the small orchestra ensemble! This ensemble is open to any string, wind, brass or percussion player with at least 2 years of playing experience.  We will focus on sight-reading music and learning a couple of Classical pieces to play on the last day. It is an excellent way to learn about how to play in an ensemble, follow a conductor and improve on your instrument.  This ensemble is ideal for those who were unable or only partially able to participate in an instrumental music class during the school year. The small orchestra ensemble may also be ideal for those already with experience but who may need a review and reinforcement of music reading, playing fundamentals and technique that are vital for lasting musical development.  Play music with your friends!

Ukulele


Learn to play the Ukulele! This class is intended for absolute beginners: those who have never played a ukulele before and would love to learn how to hold, tune, and play the ukulele for sing-alongs or just for yourself. You don’t need any previous musical experience, and don’t even have to know how to read music!  This fun class will introduce you to strumming patterns and some basic finger picking. You will also learn basic musical notation and chord chart recognition that will help you play one folk song and one pop song. There may also be time to write your own song and accompany yourself. Open to anyone who wants to play music!

Welcome to the Middle School

Open to all incoming 6th graders.  Get off to a successful start at PMS.  Become familiar with the campus and make new friends. It's a time to learn the ABC's of 6th grade, play games, create posters, problem solve and so much more.

A hands-on course where students will experiment techniques of watercoloring and explore painting in a relaxed environment indoors and all around the campus.

YAY! CLAY!

This all level clay class is for clay-lovers...Using hand-building techniques we will pinch, coil, drape and slab-build that clay into the amazing creatures of your imagination. It will be  GREAT SUMMER FUN!
